Anıtkabir: Atatürk Mausoleum - A Monument to the Father of Modern Turkey





Anıtkabir, located in Ankara, Turkey, is a monumental complex dedicated to the memory of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. Anıtkabir, which translates to "monumental tomb" in English, is not just a mausoleum of Atatürk but a vast area encompassing various structures and memorials that pay tribute to his life and legacy.

Construction of Anıtkabir began in 1944, nine years after Atatürk's passing, and was completed in 1953. The design, chosen through a national competition, is the work of architects Professor Emin Onat and Assistant Professor Ahmet Orhan Arda.

The Layout of Anıtkabir

Visitors to Anıtkabir enter through the Lions' Road, a 262-meter long tree-lined avenue flanked by 24 imposing lion statues. The lions, inspired by Hittite art, symbolize both power and peace. The Lions' Road leads to the Ceremonial Plaza, a vast open space that can accommodate up to 15,000 people.

On one side of the Ceremonial Plaza lies the mausoleum of Atatürk. The mausoleum itself is a two-story structure. The upper floor, known as the Hall of Honor, houses Atatürk's symbolic sarcophagus. The actual tomb is located discreetly on the lower level.



Surrounding the Mausoleum

The mausoleum is surrounded by colonnades on three sides. These colonnades feature reliefs depicting significant moments from Atatürk's life and the Turkish War of Independence.

Opposite the mausoleum is the exit from the complex, which leads back down the Lions' Road. Several other structures and memorials are scattered throughout the Anıtkabir complex. These include the Museum, which displays artifacts related to Atatürk's life, and the Peace Park, a tranquil wooded area offering a space for reflection.
